June 10, 2018

Good morning and what a beautiful morning it is! I am so thankful for the sun and the puffy clouds and blue skies!

My mom had open heart surgery early Friday morning and last I heard from my brother late last night she continues to do very well, especially for an 89 year old woman who usually can run circles around me! She was due to go in for knee replacement surgery and during the pre-op tests they discovered an aneurysm on her aorta and that needed to be taken care of before the knee surgery. She is at the Univ of Penn hospital system in Philly in the cardiac ICU for a few days before moving to a regular room. I was able to video chat with her through my brother yesterday afternoon and she had some loopy moments but also some clear moments. Before she went in for surgery she had my brother send me a picture of her sticking her tongue out at me and being silly. She is going to keep the nurses on their toes for sure! :)  She has always been and will always be young at heart. She taught kindergarten and first grade for over 35 years and has always been my inspiration for being a teacher. I always wanted to be just like her. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers during her recovery :)

Please continue to talk with and work with your children on table manners and being kind to everyone. Things have improved a lot and we want to continue to see them improve and be awesome friends all the time!

I love to see the creativity that is coming out of the children! On their own they decided to have a royal ball and made invitations and set up chairs for the audience to watch and they had such fun ballroom dancing!

In the block center they have been creating some amazing structures and zoos and dinosaur parks!

On Friday I read to them before nap time a really cute book about Sam, a mouse who lives in a hole in the wall in the library. He loves to read the books and decides he wants to be an author. At night he writes little stories and leaves them around in different sections of the library for people to read. He left on in the mystery section, the picture book and other places. Everyone wanted to meet the author and he knew people were afraid of mice so he set up an empty box of tissues with a mirror inside and placed a sign over top that said "meet the author". When the children looked inside they saw their own faces.

This gave me an idea and they kids are so excited about it. We are going to write our own stories and on Wednesday we are having a meet the author day.

  • On this Wednesday, the 13th, we will be providing refreshments for you to sit and eat while your child reads their story to you. Please plan a few extra minutes in the morning during drop off to sit and eat and read with your child...it can be mom, dad, aunt, grandparent..anyone can sit and eat and read with your child.

  • Friday is Doughnuts for Dad...during morning drop off time

  • Please apply sunscreen to your child in the mornings before coming to school

  • Please make sure your child has a water bottle filled with water to drink during the day and to take outside with them when we go to play.

May 258, 2018

Good morning! I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend despite all the rain! All this rain makes me feel really lazy and want to take a nap!

I did not take a lot of pictures this week for our blog. My neighborhood has had a bunch of homes being broken in to from last Sunday to Friday and they were all in the same block as my house. The neighbor whose driveway is right opposite of mine came home last Sunday night and used his lower driveway entrance on the side street and apparently the thieves had just gotten in his front door with a key they keep under a planter (and will not do that anymore) and the front door was wide open and the thieves had run off. Another neighbor had a similar thing happen when they came home at 11:30 at night and their front door was open and they had run out the back door. Two seasonal homes literally two and three houses up the street from me where broken into in daylight..in the morning and afternoon. It appears the person is on foot as no cars have been spotted leaving when the homeowners have come home and surprised the thieves. This neighborhood is on the same street as the Maggie Valley Police Dept and has been established here for over 20 years. We have seasonal homeowners, vacation home owners, some rentals and full time people like me. This neighborhood is off the main road through Maggie so if you are up here on this mountain, you know where you are going or you are really lost or you have decided you hit the lottery with empty homes to break into. So for that reason, I have hidden my laptop, the camera, check books and other things just in case our house gets broken into. We have lived here for 21 years and have never had any concerns about safety. We haven't heard about any new break ins from our HOA secretary since Friday, so fingers crossed it has stopped.

I will be out tomorrow, Tuesday, May 29th. The youngest son needs his wisdom teeth out and we have to leave the area for a consultation with an oral surgeon that is in our dental network and we will be going to Charlotte. Mrs. Sally will be my sub! :)

The "bullying" stopped for a few days and then very slowly started up again, however this time it was not anything like it had been and was low key. Please keep talking to your children about being kind to everyone. They don't have to play with everyone all the time and they don't have to like everyone all the time, however we do want them to speak kindly to one another, whether they are sitting eating at the same table, or sitting next to someone at circle time or walking down the hallway.

Another thing we have been working on is ignoring a friend when they say or do something you don't like. For example if a child calls another child a baby, or butt head or booger head (and yes, these are things we have been hearing lately), we are working on empowering the kids to ignore and walk away or ignore and keep playing. When a child who has been called a baby or anything else, gets upset by the words, it empowers the child who said those things to them to continue saying them. When a child ignores those words, it takes the power away from the child saying them and it loses its fun to say them. Please remind your kids that it's okay to ignore a child when they are calling them names. We will back them up at school when it happens and make sure they know it's okay to ignore that child.

Please remember to keep a complete change of clothes in your childs plastic box on the top shelf of their cubby...shirt, pants, underwear, socks and shoes! :)

Our letter of the week will be Tt, the shape is a triangle and the number is 14. Your kids are so awesome with all our whiteboard activities with the letters and shapes and numbers!

May 20, 2018

Good morning! I hope everyone is having a great weekend and is enjoying the beautiful sunshine this morning!

Last week a note was sent home (it was with the sign-out sheet and should have been given to you when you signed your child out) explaining the last date for K-Prep will be August 15th. If you choose to take your child out earlier, we need a 30 day withdraw notice. Graduation will be the evening of August 10th in the Sanctuary, followed by a reception outside. If you withdraw your child prior to graduation, they will still be able to come back and graduate with their friends. We will have practices in the Sanctuary the week of graduation. When we find out those dates and times I will email you and let you know when to bring your child to practice. If your child is no longer enrolled at LCCEC, you will have to stay with your child while we practice. We would love for all our K-prep friends to put on that cap and gown and walk across the stage and be recognized for the awesome little people they are! If you have any questions regarding the last day of K-Prep or graduation, please don't hesitate to email me! :)

This past week we had some unfortunate incidents of children bullying and encouraging other children to bully children. I do not use the word bully lightly and only use that word when the situation calls for the word to be used. We know children say unkind things and that's part of learning and growing. We know children don't always want to play with one child or a handful of children and that's okay, however, they still need to be kind to that child. We handle the  typical developmentally appropriate behaviors in the classroom and give them words and tools to use to make a situation better the next time it comes up. These are all sweet children and we want them to learn and grown from the events of this past week so they will not be repeated again. Every day is a new day and every day we start out fresh and forgive and forget what happened the day or even minutes before.

This week we will be working on letter Hh, number 13 and the rectangle shape. Our study will continue to be friendship and what it means to be a good friend and how to be a good friend to everyone.

We will be closed Monday, May 28th in observance of Memorial Day.
